Our Story

Roots of Hope Nova Scotia began as a community-based pilot in the Northern Zone, inspired by the belief that communities have the strengths, knowledge, and relationships needed to create meaningful change in suicide prevention.

Through collaboration with local partners, people with lived and living experience, service providers, and community members, the initiative focused on building capacity, strengthening connections, and developing supports that responded to local needs.

The success and learnings from the pilot demonstrated the importance of a coordinated, community-driven approach to suicide prevention. Building on this foundation, we continue this work provincially under the Community Wellness and Supports portfolio within Nova Scotia Health Mental Health and Addictions.

Today, Roots of Hope works alongside communities to strengthen suicide prevention efforts through five pillars: specialized supports, training and networks, public awareness, means restriction, and research.

Who We Are

Roots of Hope is a network of people, organizations, and communities working together to prevent suicide and create lives worth living. We believe that suicide prevention is a shared responsibility and that meaningful change happens when we come together, build connections, and support one another.

Our network brings together community organizations, healthcare providers, educators, first responders, people with lived and living experience, cultural and community leaders, and individuals who are passionate about creating hope and connection. Each partner brings unique knowledge, strengths, and experiences that help build stronger, more compassionate communities.

Together, we work to increase awareness, strengthen supports, build skills, and create environments where people feel connected, valued, and supported. Through collaboration and shared learning, Roots of Hope helps communities develop solutions that reflect their unique needs and strengths.

Suicide prevention is not the work of one person or one organization—it is the collective effort of a community. By working together, we can create communities where everyone has a role in supporting life, fostering hope, and helping people know they are not alone.
