The My Ascension Project uses the power of personal storytelling to foster hope, reduce stigma, and encourage meaningful conversations about suicide, mental health, and recovery. Through community screenings and guided discussions, participants are invited to reflect, connect, and explore how compassion, understanding, and support can help create lives worth living.
St. Matthew’s Presbyterian Church in Elmsdale, NS has purchased the screening rights and would like to share the opportunity to see this documentary in community.
A suicide attempt left 16-year-old varsity cheerleader, Emma Benoit, paralyzed, but propelled her on a mission to use her painful experience to help others find hope, and shine more light on the fact of the importance of breaking down stigma.
My Ascension is a feature length documentary that chronicles Emma's inspiring journey and quest to walk again, as she works to bring HopeSquad, a school-based suicide prevention program, to Louisiana.
The film also highlights the stories of two remarkable young people who tragically did not survive their attempts, and we learn first-hand from their families, friends, school officials and suicide prevention experts about the devastating effects of suicide and what can be done to prevent it.
St. Matthew's and Roots of Hope NS are working alongside host organizations to create trauma-informed, compassionate spaces where participants feel welcomed, respected, and supported throughout the screening experience. From event planning and facilitator guidance to discussion resources and connections with local supports, we help communities prepare for meaningful conversations that prioritize safety, and hope.
Our goal is to ensure that every screening is more than a film—it is an opportunity for connection, reflection, and healing. By creating environments where people feel safe to engage, ask questions, and seek support if needed, communities can foster conversations that reduce stigma, strengthen understanding, and remind people that they are not alone.
The My Ascension Project explores themes related to suicide, grief, mental health, and recovery. While these conversations can be powerful and inspiring, they may also be emotional for participants. At Roots of Hope, we believe that how these conversations are held is just as important as the conversation itself.
If your organization is interested in hosting a community screening of The My Ascension Project, we'd love to work with you. Together, we can create an event that is thoughtful, supportive, and responsive to the unique needs of your community.
