Public Awareness

Suicide is surrounded by stigma, misunderstanding, and silence. These barriers can prevent people from recognizing when someone is struggling, reaching out for help, or offering support to others. Increasing public awareness helps create communities where conversations about suicide and mental health are informed, compassionate, and grounded in hope.

When people understand the warning signs, know how to respond, and feel comfortable talking about suicide, they are better equipped to support family members, friends, neighbours, colleagues, and community members. Public awareness also helps reduce myths and misconceptions, encouraging earlier help-seeking and fostering a culture where asking for help is seen as a sign of strength.

At Roots of Hope, we work alongside communities to share evidence-informed information, amplify voices of lived and living experience, and promote messages that reduce stigma while inspiring hope. Through awareness initiatives, we help build communities where everyone has a role to play in suicide prevention.

By increasing understanding and encouraging meaningful conversations, we can strengthen connections, promote help-seeking, and create communities where people feel supported.

Pillar Overview

We work with communities to increase awareness, encourage conversations about suicide prevention and mental health, and share resources that help people recognize they are not alone. We support communities in creating opportunities for connection, learning, and hope through a variety of awareness initiatives.

Health and Wellness Fairs We participate in community health and wellness events by sharing information, resources, and practical tools that promote mental health and suicide prevention. These opportunities help us connect with community members, reduce stigma, and provide information about supports available to individuals and families.

Creating Community Events Every community has unique strengths, needs, and opportunities to bring people together. Roots of Hope supports community organizations in developing their own suicide prevention and mental health awareness events by sharing resources, guidance, and ideas that help create meaningful, inclusive, and hope-filled opportunities for connection.

Roots of Hope Resource Toolkit We provide communities with access to a collection of evidence-informed resources, including educational materials, pamphlets, and tools that can be shared with community members. These resources help organizations, schools, workplaces, and community groups promote awareness and ensure people have access to trusted information and supports
