The Medication Round Up project, delivered in partnership with Bloom pharmacies, supports safer communities by encouraging people to return unused or expired medications for safe disposal. By reducing the availability of medications in the home, the initiative can help create safer environments during times of crisis while promoting responsible medication management. Community pharmacies play an important role by providing accessible, trusted places for medication disposal and opportunities to share information about suicide prevention. Through this collaboration, Roots of Hope and Bloom are bringing suicide prevention into everyday community settings and demonstrating how small, practical actions can help protect lives and create more opportunities for hope and support.
As part of the Medication Round Up project, Roots of Hope created a plain-language rack card to help community members understand the connection between medication safety and suicide prevention. The resource addresses common myths about suicide, explains why safely returning unused or expired medications matters, and provides simple, actionable steps households can take to create a safer home.
The rack card is shared at Community Wellness and Health Fairs, providing an opportunity for people to learn, ask questions, and connect with local resources. By bringing practical suicide prevention information into everyday community spaces, we help make prevention approachable and give households simple ways to take action. As part of preparing for World Suicide Prevention Day on Sept 10, Roots of Hope provides suicide awareness education for Bloom pharmacists to strengthen their confidence in recognizing and responding to suicide risk. The session explores suicide risk factors and warning signs, how to ask directly and compassionately about suicide, and how to connect someone with appropriate supports and resources.
This education recognizes pharmacists as trusted and accessible members of the community who may have important opportunities to notice when someone is struggling and help connect them to care. Participating Bloom pharmacies also receive Medication Round Up rack cards to share with customers, extending suicide prevention information and practical medication safety resources into the community.
